Pompous Ass Words

via the NPL mailing list, a web page devoted to Pompous Ass Words, "an uncommonly understood word that is synonymous with a commonly understood one." PAWs are a good way to make your text less clear.

Hmmph! I think palaver, trope, fait accompli, seppuku, sobriquet are fine, non-pompous words. I like the way the sound, and their meanings are specific.

I also have no problem with tendentious, jejune, and matriculate.

I'm all for being clear in one's writing, but always using the most common word (OR quotidian! ha!) is totally boring.
