Hmmph! I think palaver, trope, fait accompli, seppuku, sobriquet are fine, non-pompous words. I like the way the sound, and their meanings are specific.
I also have no problem with tendentious, jejune, and matriculate.
I'm all for being clear in one's writing, but always using the most common word (OR quotidian! ha!) is totally boring.
